Environment

Prefers rocky bottoms, seagrass beds (Posidonia oceanica), and areas with mixed sand and rubble. It is a demersal species, often found near shelters such as crevices and caves.

Geographic range

Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the British Isles (rarely) south to Senegal, including the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores. Also widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.
