Environment

Pelagic and semi-pelagic, often associated with rocky reefs, seamounts, offshore islands, and submerged structures. They form schools, particularly when young, and are known to aggregate around baitfish schools.

Geographic range

Circumglobal in temperate and subtropical waters. Found in the Pacific Ocean (from California to Chile, and across to Japan, Korea, Australia, and New Zealand), the Indian Ocean (South Africa, Australia), and the Atlantic Ocean (Brazil, Tristan da Cunha, St. Helena). Absent from the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea.
