Environment

Pelagic, but often associated with reefs, wrecks, oil rigs, rocky outcrops, and other submerged structures in offshore waters. They prefer clear, open water.

Geographic range

Circumglobal in tropical and temperate waters. Found in the western Atlantic from Nova Scotia to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea; eastern Atlantic from the British Isles to South Africa, including the Mediterranean Sea; and throughout the Indo-Pacific region from the Red Sea and East Africa to Japan, Australia, and Hawaii.
