Prefers clear, cool to warm streams and rivers, often with gravel or rocky bottoms. Also found in lakes and ponds, particularly those with flowing water. They favor areas with moderate current and cover such as submerged logs, boulders, or undercut banks.

Geographic range

Eastern North America, ranging from the Maritime Provinces of Canada (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia) south to northern Georgia and west to the Great Lakes basin (primarily Lake Ontario and Lake Erie drainages) and parts of the Ohio River basin.
