Environment

Demersal, inhabiting cold, deep waters over rocky bottoms, mud, or sand. Often associated with submarine canyons, ledges, and other complex seafloor structures that provide shelter and foraging opportunities.

Geographic range

North Atlantic Ocean, from the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank northward along the Scotian Shelf, Grand Banks, and into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, extending to Greenland and Iceland. Its range overlaps with that of the Deepwater Redfish (Sebastes mentella).
