Environment

Pelagic to demersal, often associated with rocky reefs, pinnacles, and submarine canyons. Forms large schools in midwater over hard bottoms, particularly during feeding and spawning. Can also be found over soft bottoms.

Geographic range

Eastern North Pacific Ocean, from Baja California, Mexico, north to the Gulf of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Most abundant off the coasts of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.
