Widely distributed in the Atlantic Ocean, including the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea. Also found in the Pacific Ocean (where it was historically considered the same species as Scomber japonicus, but S. colias is now recognized as the Atlantic counterpart). Its range extends from the North Sea and Norwegian Sea south to South Africa in the eastern Atlantic, and from Nova Scotia to Argentina in the western Atlantic.
