Geographic range

Native to Eastern and Central Europe and Western Asia, from the Elbe River basin eastward to the Aral Sea basin. Widely introduced throughout Western Europe (e.g., UK, France, Spain) and parts of Asia, often for angling and aquaculture purposes.
