Primarily deep, cold, well-oxygenated waters of large lakes. Can be found from near the surface in spring and fall to depths exceeding 60 meters (200 feet) in summer and winter.

Environment

Oligotrophic (nutrient-poor) lakes, large reservoirs, and occasionally large rivers connected to such lakes. Requires stable cold temperatures and high dissolved oxygen levels, especially in deeper strata. Prefers rocky substrates for spawning.

Geographic range

Native to northern North America, including Canada (most provinces and territories), Alaska, and the Great Lakes region of the United States. Introduced to many other cold-water lakes globally.
