Environment

Requires cold (ideally <15°C, critically <18°C), clean, complex, and well-oxygenated water. Prefers large, complex river systems with intact riparian zones, stable stream banks, and abundant large woody debris. Spawning requires cold, clean gravels with upwelling groundwater. Found in headwater streams, larger rivers, and cold lakes.

Geographic range

Native to western North America, from the headwaters of the Yukon River in northern British Columbia and Alberta, south through Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana, into northern Nevada and California.
