Environment

Cold, clear, well-oxygenated waters. In rivers, they prefer riffles, runs, and pools with gravel or rocky bottoms, often seeking cover under undercut banks, submerged logs, or overhanging vegetation. In lakes, they inhabit littoral and pelagic zones. Anadromous forms (sea trout) spend 1-5 years in coastal marine waters before returning to freshwater to spawn.

Geographic range

Native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. Widely introduced globally, including North America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Africa and Asia, establishing self-sustaining populations in many regions.
