Coastal and offshore waters, including continental and insular shelves. Inhabits estuaries, bays, and shallow inshore areas, as well as deeper offshore regions. Prefers warm tropical and subtropical waters.

Geographic range

Widespread in the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific (from South Africa to the Red Sea, across to Southeast Asia, Australia, and the western Pacific) and the eastern and western Atlantic Oceans (from the Mediterranean and West Africa to Brazil, and from the southeastern United States to the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico).
