Environment

Pelagic, but often associated with structures such as reefs, wrecks, buoys, channel markers, and floating debris (e.g., Sargassum mats). Also found in estuaries and nearshore waters, including bays and mangrove areas. Prefers warm, temperate to tropical waters.

Geographic range

Circumglobal in tropical and subtropical waters, excluding the eastern Pacific Ocean. Found in the western Atlantic from Nova Scotia, Canada, south to Argentina, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. In the Indo-Pacific, it ranges from South Africa eastward to Japan and Australia.
