• Minimum tank size: 1000 gallons
• Compatibility: Best kept in very large, species-specific tanks or with other large, robust South American cichlids or characins that can tolerate its size and occasional boisterousness. Not suitable for typical community aquariums.
• Special requirements: Requires extremely large tanks with powerful filtration due to its size and detritivorous feeding habits which can produce significant waste. Substrate should be fine sand to allow for sifting. Strong water flow mimicking riverine conditions is beneficial. Requires a diet rich in vegetable matter and detritus, often supplemented with spirulina flakes, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables.
