Typically found in shallow to moderate depths (3-20 feet), but can move deeper in summer or winter. Often associated with submerged structures.

Environment

Lakes, reservoirs, slow-moving rivers, and large ponds. Prefer clear, vegetated waters with submerged timber, brush piles, weed beds, and other cover. They are less tolerant of strong currents.

Geographic range

Native to eastern North America, ranging from the Great Lakes basin south to the Gulf Coast, and west to the Great Plains. Widely introduced throughout the contiguous United States and parts of Canada, making them one of the most widespread freshwater sport fish.
