Commonly associated with submerged vegetation (e.g., lily pads, hydrilla), brush piles, fallen trees, docks, and other structures that provide cover and ambush points. Tolerant of some turbidity but thrives in clearer conditions.

Geographic range

Native to eastern North America, primarily in the Mississippi River basin and its tributaries, extending from the Great Lakes south to the Gulf Coast, and from the eastern Great Plains to the Atlantic slope. Widely introduced outside its native range throughout the United States and parts of Canada.
