Environment

Prefers sandy or muddy-sand bottoms in sheltered bays, estuaries, lagoons, and coastal areas. They are often found near seagrass beds or areas with sparse vegetation, where they can burrow into the substrate for protection.

Geographic range

Widespread in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, from the White Sea and Norway south to the Mediterranean Sea, including the Black Sea and the Canary Islands. Also found in the Baltic Sea.
