Environment

Prefers sheltered coastal areas, estuaries, lagoons, salt marshes, and tidal pools with sandy or muddy substrates. Tolerates a wide range of salinities, from almost freshwater to full marine conditions, but thrives in brackish environments. Often found amongst seagrass beds or algal mats.

Geographic range

Widespread along the Atlantic coasts of Europe, from Norway south to Morocco, including the Baltic Sea, North Sea, English Channel, and the Mediterranean Sea. Also present in the Black Sea.
