Environment

Pelagic, inhabiting temperate and tropical waters of continental shelves and coastal areas. Found in estuaries, bays, surf zones, and offshore waters. Prefers areas with schooling baitfish.

Geographic range

Widely distributed globally in temperate and tropical waters, excluding the eastern Pacific Ocean. Found in the Atlantic Ocean (from Nova Scotia to Argentina, and from Portugal to South Africa), the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea, and the Indian Ocean (around Australia and parts of Africa).
