Primarily a deepwater species, typically found at depths ranging from 50 to 800 meters (160 to 2,600 feet). Juveniles may inhabit shallower waters, sometimes as shallow as 10-50 meters, often associated with kelp beds or rocky reefs.

Environment

Associated with rocky reefs, seamounts, canyons, and continental shelf and slope areas. They prefer complex benthic habitats that offer shelter and ambush opportunities. Adults are often found near drop-offs and pinnacles.

Geographic range

Predominantly found in the temperate waters of the Southern Hemisphere. Its main distribution includes New Zealand (where it is most common), southern Australia, and parts of the South Atlantic (e.g., Tristan da Cunha, Gough Island).
