Demersal to semi-pelagic, inhabiting both offshore banks and coastal areas. Prefers rocky bottoms, wrecks, and areas with strong currents. Forms large schools.

Geographic range

North Atlantic Ocean, including the waters off Greenland, Iceland, Norway, the Barents Sea, the North Sea, and along the eastern coast of North America from Greenland to Cape Hatteras.
