Typically found from the surface down to 200 meters (650 feet), but can occasionally be found deeper. Juveniles often inhabit shallower, inshore waters.

Environment

Prefers rocky reefs, wrecks, kelp beds, and areas with strong currents. Often found in mid-water or near the seabed, but will rise to the surface to feed. Forms schools, especially when young.

Geographic range

Northeast Atlantic Ocean, from Norway and Iceland south to the Bay of Biscay, including the British Isles, the North Sea, and the western Baltic Sea.
