Environment

Estuaries, bays, sounds, tidal creeks, coastal lagoons, and nearshore ocean waters. Prefers soft bottoms (mud, sand) where it can forage for invertebrates. Often found around oyster reefs, jetties, pilings, and other structures.

Geographic range

Western Atlantic Ocean, from Nova Scotia, Canada, south along the U.S. Atlantic coast, throughout the Gulf of Mexico, and along the Caribbean coast of Central and South America to Argentina.
