Environment

Prefers rocky reefs, kelp beds, and areas with mixed sand and rubble bottoms. They are often found in crevices, under ledges, and around other structures that provide shelter and ambush points. Juveniles may inhabit shallower, more sheltered areas.

Geographic range

Endemic to New Zealand, found throughout the coastal waters of the North and South Islands, including the Chatham Islands and Stewart Island. More abundant in cooler southern waters.
