Environment

Prefers structured habitats such as rocky reefs, kelp forests, eelgrass beds, artificial reefs (piers, jetties, oil rigs), and sandy bottoms adjacent to these structures. They often associate with sandy or muddy bottoms where they can partially bury themselves.

Geographic range

Eastern Pacific Ocean, from Monterey Bay, California, south to Magdalena Bay, Baja California Sur, Mexico, and throughout the Gulf of California.
