Depth

Typically found from shallow coastal waters (a few meters) down to depths of over 200 meters (650 feet). Juveniles often inhabit shallower, sheltered areas.

Environment

Prefers rocky reefs, sandy bottoms, seagrass beds, and estuaries. Often associated with complex benthic structures, including artificial reefs and wrecks. Adults are more demersal.

Geographic range

Southwestern Pacific Ocean, primarily around Australia (southern Queensland to Western Australia, including Tasmania) and New Zealand. Also found in the Norfolk Island and Kermadec Islands regions.
