Keeping Tilapia in an aquarium requires the right conditions.

Aquarium Information

• Care level: intermediate
• Temperament: semi-aggressive
• Diet: omnivore
• Minimum tank size: 100 gallons (for adult Oreochromis niloticus)
• Compatibility: Can be kept with other large, robust cichlids or similarly sized, non-aggressive species. Avoid small, timid fish as they may be preyed upon or harassed. Intraspecific aggression can be high, especially among males.
• Special requirements: Require excellent filtration due to their high bioload. A spacious tank with plenty of hiding spots (rocks, driftwood) is essential to reduce aggression. They are sensitive to sudden changes in water quality. Some species can tolerate brackish conditions.
