Environment

Anadromous, spending 1-4 years in freshwater lakes after hatching, then 1-4 years in the North Pacific Ocean, and finally returning to their natal freshwater systems to spawn. Some populations are entirely freshwater-resident (kokanee).

Geographic range

North Pacific Ocean, from Hokkaido, Japan, and the Kamchatka Peninsula in Asia, across the Bering Sea to Alaska, and south to the Columbia River in Oregon, USA. Major spawning grounds are found in Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington State.
