Prefers clear, cold, well-oxygenated freshwater streams, rivers, and lakes with gravel or rocky bottoms. Requires access to cool, shaded areas and complex instream habitat (e.g., undercut banks, submerged logs, boulders) for cover and foraging. Anadromous Steelhead spend 1-3 years in freshwater, 1-3 years in the ocean, and return to freshwater to spawn.

Geographic range

Native to the Pacific drainages of western North America, from Alaska to Baja California, and northeastern Asia (Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia). Widely introduced globally to suitable cold-water habitats on every continent except Antarctica, making it one of the most widespread freshwater fish species.
