Environment

Prefers slow-moving or still waters of streams, small to medium rivers, lakes, ponds, and backwaters. It is often associated with soft substrates (silt, sand, mud) and dense aquatic vegetation, submerged logs, leaf litter, or detritus, which provide cover and foraging grounds. Tolerant of some turbidity.

Geographic range

Widely distributed across eastern North America. Its range extends from southern Quebec and Ontario in Canada, south through the Great Lakes basin and Mississippi River drainage, to the Gulf Coast states (Florida to Texas), and east along the Atlantic slope from New York to North Carolina.
