Prefers clear, cool to warm, well-oxygenated streams and rivers with moderate to swift currents. Commonly found over rocky, gravelly, or sandy substrates, often hiding under stones, logs, or other debris during the day.

Geographic range

Widespread in central and eastern North America. Its range extends from the Great Lakes basin south through the Mississippi River drainage to the Gulf Coast states, and west into parts of the Great Plains. Also found in tributaries of the Hudson Bay drainage.
