Environment

Demersal, inhabiting rocky shores, kelp forests, algal beds, gravel, and sandy bottoms. Prefers areas with plenty of cover for ambush predation and camouflage. Tolerant of a wide range of salinities and temperatures, often found in brackish waters near river mouths.

Geographic range

Circumpolar distribution in the Northern Hemisphere. Found in the North Atlantic, Arctic Ocean, and North Pacific. In the Atlantic, it ranges from the Barents Sea, Greenland, Iceland, and the Baltic Sea, south to the British Isles, and along the North American coast from Greenland to Massachusetts. In the Pacific, it occurs from the Bering Sea south to Japan and British Columbia.
