Environment

Associated with rocky reefs, coral reefs, ledges, wrecks, and other hard-bottom structures. Juveniles are often found in shallower seagrass beds or mangrove areas, moving to deeper reefs as they mature.

Geographic range

Western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts (rarely) and Bermuda, south through Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and along the coast of South America to southern Brazil.
