Environment

Naturally inhabits slow-moving, warm, acidic blackwater and clearwater streams, tributaries, and floodplains of the Orinoco River basin. These environments are characterized by dense aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, leaf litter, and sandy or silty substrates. The Gold variant is exclusively captive-bred.

Geographic range

The wild form (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is native to the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela and Colombia. The Gold variant is a selectively bred aquarium strain and does not exist in the wild.
