Typically found in depths ranging from 1 to 10 meters (3 to 33 feet), but can be found deeper in large lakes.

Environment

Prefers clear, cool, flowing water in rivers and streams with rocky or gravel bottoms, and clear, cool lakes with rocky shorelines, ledges, and drop-offs. They seek cover in submerged logs, boulders, rock piles, and aquatic vegetation. They are less tolerant of turbidity and warm water than Largemouth Bass.

Geographic range

Native to the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River system, the Hudson Bay basin, and the Mississippi River basin from southern Quebec and Maine west to North Dakota and south to northern Alabama and Oklahoma. Widely introduced throughout North America and other parts of the world.
