Environment

Prefers clear, cool, flowing waters of small to medium-sized streams and rivers with rocky or gravel substrates. Often associated with riffles, runs, and pools, seeking cover among boulders, submerged logs, undercut banks, and aquatic vegetation. Less tolerant of warm, turbid, or sluggish waters compared to other black bass species.

Geographic range

Native to the Coosa River system of Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee, and the Tallapoosa and Cahaba River systems in Alabama. Historically, its range was restricted to these drainages, but it has been introduced into other river systems within the southeastern U.S., sometimes leading to hybridization with other Micropterus species.
