Environment

Demersal to semi-pelagic, inhabiting sandy or muddy bottoms, often near coastal areas, estuaries, and offshore banks. Juveniles are often found in shallower waters, sometimes associated with jellyfish for protection.

Geographic range

Northeastern Atlantic Ocean, from the Barents Sea and Iceland south to the Portuguese coast, including the North Sea, Baltic Sea (western parts), and the Mediterranean Sea.
