Environment

Prefers sandy or muddy bottoms, often found in surf zones, estuaries, bays, and nearshore ocean environments. They are demersal, spending most of their time near the seabed.

Geographic range

Primarily along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America, from Massachusetts south to Florida, and throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Some species extend into the Caribbean and South America.
