Typically found in shallow coastal waters, from the surface down to about 200 meters (650 feet), but most commonly in the upper 50 meters.

Environment

Pelagic to semi-pelagic, inhabiting coastal bays, estuaries, and nearshore continental shelf waters. Often associated with soft bottoms (sand or mud) where it feeds on benthic invertebrates, but also found in open water.

Geographic range

Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa eastward to Japan, Australia, and the South Pacific islands. Also found in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, having migrated through the Suez Canal (Lessepsian migrant).
