Environment

Primarily found in the freshwater reaches of coastal rivers and streams, often in areas with abundant snags (submerged timber), undercut banks, rock bars, and aquatic vegetation. They migrate to brackish or saline estuarine environments for spawning. Juveniles may spend time in estuaries before moving upstream.

Geographic range

Southeastern Australia, from the Mary River in Queensland south to the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria. Their distribution is largely restricted to coastal drainages east of the Great Dividing Range.
