Environment

Prefers slow-flowing to still waters of rivers, billabongs, lakes, and impoundments. Often associated with submerged timber (snags), rocky outcrops, and dense aquatic vegetation, which provide shelter and ambush points. Tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, including turbid water.

Geographic range

Native to the Murray-Darling river system in southeastern Australia, including Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. Also introduced to other river systems in Australia, such as the Fitzroy River in Queensland, and some impoundments outside its natural range.
