Environment

Adults inhabit coastal coral reefs, rocky reefs, and offshore areas. Juveniles are commonly found in estuaries, mangrove creeks, tidal flats, and lower reaches of rivers, often in turbid waters. They show a preference for areas with structural complexity for shelter and ambush predation.

Geographic range

Indo-West Pacific: Red Sea and East Africa to Samoa, north to the Ryukyu Islands (southern Japan), and south to Australia (northern and eastern coasts) and New Caledonia. Also reported from the eastern Mediterranean via the Suez Canal (Lessepsian migrant).
