Environment

Inhabits coral reefs, rocky reefs, lagoons, and sometimes estuaries. Juveniles often found in shallower, protected areas. Adults form large schools, often congregating around reef structures, caves, and wrecks during the day, dispersing to feed at night.

Geographic range

Widespread throughout the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa eastward to the Marquesas Islands, northward to southern Japan, and southward to Australia and Lord Howe Island. Also introduced to the Hawaiian Islands and the southeastern Atlantic.
