Typically found in shallow coastal waters to depths of about 100 meters, though occasionally recorded deeper (up to 200 meters).

Environment

Prefers sandy or muddy bottoms, estuaries, and sheltered bays. They are demersal, spending most of their time partially buried in the substrate.

Geographic range

Northeastern Atlantic Ocean, from the Bay of Biscay northwards to the Barents Sea, including the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and around the British Isles and Iceland.
