Typically found in shallow coastal waters, from the surface down to about 50 meters (164 feet), though occasionally deeper. Juveniles are often found in very shallow estuaries and lagoons.

Environment

Coastal pelagic and inshore waters, including sandy beaches, rocky reefs, estuaries, and sometimes even entering river mouths. Prefers areas with strong currents and abundant baitfish.

Geographic range

Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the Bay of Biscay south to South Africa, including the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. Also found in the Western Indian Ocean along the coast of South Africa.
