They tolerate a wide range of turbidity but thrive in clearer conditions.

Geographic range

Native to the southeastern United States, from North Carolina south to Florida, and west to Texas and Oklahoma. Widely introduced outside its native range, including throughout much of the eastern and central U.S., and into parts of the western U.S. and Mexico.
