Environment

Prefers slow-moving or still waters of streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, and backwaters. Commonly found in areas with abundant aquatic vegetation, submerged logs, and other cover. Tolerant of turbid conditions and silty bottoms, more so than many other sunfish species.

Geographic range

Native to the central United States, primarily within the Mississippi River basin. Its range extends from southern Minnesota and Wisconsin south to Louisiana and Texas, and east to parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. Introduced populations exist in some other areas.
