Environment

Prefers warm, sluggish, and often turbid waters with abundant aquatic vegetation, submerged logs, and other cover. Common in swamps, oxbow lakes, backwaters of rivers, ponds, and slow-moving streams. Tolerant of low oxygen levels and high turbidity.

Geographic range

Native to the eastern and central United States, primarily in the Mississippi River basin and Gulf Coast states, extending north to the Great Lakes region (southern Michigan, Wisconsin) and east to the Atlantic slope drainages from Virginia south to Florida. Introduced in some western states.
