Environment

Prefers slow-moving or still waters such as lakes, ponds, canals, swamps, and the backwaters of rivers. They are often associated with dense aquatic vegetation, submerged logs, and other cover, which they use for ambush predation. They can tolerate low oxygen conditions due to their ability to gulp atmospheric air using a vascularized swim bladder.

Geographic range

Endemic to the southeastern United States. Primarily found throughout peninsular Florida, extending north into the lower Apalachicola River drainage in the Florida panhandle and parts of southern Georgia. Its range is largely confined to the Florida peninsula and adjacent areas.
