Environment

Prefers clear, slow-moving, or stagnant waters of rivers, oxbow lakes, bayous, swamps, and backwaters. Often associated with dense aquatic vegetation, submerged logs, and other cover where they can ambush prey. Tolerant of low oxygen conditions due to their ability to gulp atmospheric air.

Geographic range

Primarily found in the central and southeastern United States, ranging from the Great Lakes basin (specifically Lake Michigan and Lake Erie drainages) south through the Mississippi River basin to the Gulf Coast states, and east to Florida. Its range extends west into parts of Texas and Oklahoma.
